Taskmasters were evolved from the Keeper through the manipulation of the special Naiad Queens of the Scylla Brood.

Once mutated they were used to help Zzantith control and coordinate the Brood and monitor using their enhanced mental capabilities. Taskmasters may carry other Zerg within hollows in their hides. In addition to their leadership dutues, they tend to young larvae and transport other Zerg across the depths of space by carrying them within their shelled bodies.
Taskmasters fly using helium-filled gas sacs combined with a weak telekinetic psi-ability for lift and motive power. The Taskmaster can create a small patch of Creep through an activated anatomical process, the radius steadily expanding with time, during which the Taskmaster must remain stationary.
Taskmasters can evolve into Augurs, which act as detectors.
