The Barghest is a specialized Zergling strain more powerful and resilient than its standard counterpart, used by the Dark Swarm.

Barghests form the most numerous of the Dark Swarm's special mutations; the simple DNA allows two Barghests to be spawned from a single larva. The larvae get the genetic information from the 'primordial ooze' of Spawning Pools. Barghests are 1.5 meters tall and possess clawed feet. Barghests have had their physiology altered through a metabolic boost to increase their reflexes and rate of movement, and an augmentation of their adrenal glands, changing their glandular balance to induce a battle frenzy.

Barghests are created only through the manipulation of Dark Baronesses, as the Dark Empress is responsible for only the most powerful strains.
